X-Rays
Dental x-rays give a picture of what is happening in parts of your mouth that you normally cannot see. Also called radiographs, they are an important tool for the dentist. The three most common types of dental X-rays are the bitewing, periapical and panoramic X-rays.
Bitewing X-rays are taken during most routine dental check-ups and are most useful for revealing cavities between the teeth. Periapical X-rays show the whole tooth, including the roots, as well as the bone of the jaw. Panoramic X-rays give a broad overview of the entire mouth, revealing images of the teeth, upper and lower jawbone, sinuses, and other hard and soft tissues of the head and neck.
Early decay, impacted teeth, abscesses and bone loss from gum disease are all things that dental x-rays reveal. They are useful in helping to diagnose such problems, as well as decide a course of treatment.
